Huts in the Snow

Photograph

General Washington directed the squads of men to build huts that were to be 14 by 16 feet in size, with fireplaces made of wood and lined with 18 inches of clay. Since boards for roofs would have been hard to come by, Washington offered a reward of $100 to the soldier or officer who suggested a better substitute.
